Orientation

Orientation for the Summer Institute provided me with some much needed technological information for surviving in the Institute! I would like to say that I am very "in the know" about the workings of technology and current on the latest trends, but alas, I always seem to find out how to work these new inventions last. Most people assume that because I am only twenty-six, I will be able to quickly and effortlessly use these new technological inventions.

However, I tend to be a little slow on the initial introduction to these technologies and was excited and grateful to Steve Fulton for providing us with the anatomy of a tweet handout. I have obviously heard of twitter, but had little knowledge of how to create an account, send a tweet, or research on twitter. This class helped me to really see the benefits of twitter. Thank you Steve Fulton!

I also really appreciated the modeling of a demonstration and demonstration guidelines handout. I felt both the different approaches to presentations and the visual handout helped prepare me for SI. Currently, I'm wobbling between two ideas that I would like to use for my demo this week. There will be more to come on this topic in my next post!

  1. Ashley, I agree with you about being a little slow to adopt new technologies. I hear about a lot of new things and sometimes read some Tweets or see a few people's Tumblrs but I don't actively engage in a lot of new media. I'm also glad we got to different demos in action.

I'm interested to hear more about your demo ideas (technology and visual grammar, right?) I'm also really interested in learning how to make grammar rules stick with kids. Have you read any of Jeff Anderson's books? I have a copy of Mechanically Inclined and he really encourages visual representations of sentence structures and I really like his many mentor sentences that he uses to inspire writing. I was thinking of maybe using some of his ideas in my demos.

  2. Ashley, thanks for being so honest! Being a fellow twenty-six year old, I understand the assumptions you are referring to. I tend to avoid most social media (I do not have a smartphone and joined Twitter only during Orientation), simply as a personal choice - a dynamic I want to explore during SI. I am looking forward to getting a different perspective and seeing educational and inspirational purposes for some of the media I am less familiar with.

In terms of the demos, I think both Steve and Lacy did a wonderful job modeling for us. I do want to hear more, though, because there are a few details on the handout from Sally that I am still a bit wobbly on. Looking forward to hearing more about your demo!

  3. Wondering how you are feeling now about edging (or pushing) your way into more technologies this week?!
